Understanding Hair Loss

A brief overview

Why Does Hair Loss Happen?

Hair loss can be one of the most stressful conditions that men and women can suffer. There are a few options in resolving hair loss, to choose the right option effectively it is necessary to understand the way that hair grows and the lifestyle and medical factors that can impair or enhance hair growth.

Hair loss can be caused by negative changes in the body's internal environment, which can be sparked by changes in stress, diet, hormonal changes, illness among other factors. One of the most common causes is deficiency in iron and ferritin, which is why one of the things we always recommend is examining and ensuring your diet is healthy and includes a source of iron and protein.

An underlying factor that often influences the gradual reduction in the volume of hair for both men and women, is the sensitivity of the body to androgens, which is a hormone that is found in men and women. The link between Androgens and hair loss in men in particular has been researched thoroughly and is an area of continuing medical research which shows significant promise for the future of those suffering with alopecia and hair loss. Hair loss in women is often more complicated by factors that can include medical conditions, hormonal imbalances and even just wearing hair pulled too tightly over extended periods of time.

    How Does Hair Grow?

    Step 1: Anagen

This is your hair’s growth phase and the longer it stays in this phase, the longer it grows. About 85 – 95 percent of the hair on your head is at this stage in the cycle at any given time.

    Step 2: Catagen

The Catagen phase signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this stage at any time.

    Step 3: Telogen

The Telogen Phase is a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing. An estimate of 10-15% of your hairs are in this phase at any given moment.

    Step 4: Exogen / Anagen

The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out. Now the whole process can begin again!

    How to Combat Hair Loss?

For some, hair loss can cause mild disappointment, for others significant psychological distress and in rare cases is associated with low self-esteem and depression. This explains the huge market of “miracle” products and treatments that too often turn out to be a sham.At Lutétia Clinic, there are effective treatments that can improve the health of your scalp and follicles, for instance, LED therapy, and Mesotherapy. Scalp micro pigmentation can create the illusion of thicker hair and cover up scalp imperfections. Hair transplants are, of course, the most effective and most permanent way to combat hair loss. A short information meeting with one of our hair specialists can answer any of your questions and provide the best options for your hair loss situation.
